Trapline Tools
There are many different tools in the trapper’s arsenal that helps us be more efficient on the trapline. Some of these tools are absolutely necessary while others are merely helpful to have on hand in the aid of set making. It’s worth noting that having to many tools and gadgets can actually slow you down and cause unneeded weight in your set making bag. Keeping things simple in my opinion is the way to go. I’m going to cover the basic tools and equipment that I find to be either needed or worth spending the extra money on.
Dirt Sifter: Used for sifting dirt over your trap. It keeps out all debris and large chunks that would stop your trap from closing properly when fired.
Dirt Hole Auger: An auger of two or three inch diameter that is attached to a drill. It’s used for auguring out dirt holes for predator sets.
Pan Covers: A piece of material used for covering your trap pan so that soil doesn’t get underneath of it causing it not to fire.
Trapper Cap: A tool designed to fit over the traps pan, preventing it from firing and dirt getting underneath it.
Hammer: A trapline hammer is used for pounding in stakes and drivers. I suggest buying one with a blade on the backside so you can use it for digging the trap bed as well.
Trowel/Tile Spade: A digging tool used for digging dirt holes, pocket sets, making blind sets, etc.
Setting Tool: A tool for the aide of setting foothold traps and bodygrips. Comes in multiple sizes and designs.
Bodygrip Safety: A tool used to prevent the jaws on a bodygrip from closing while getting the trap into position.
Stake Driver: Some staking types use a driver to drive the earth anchor into the ground. Drivers designs vary by anchor brand and type.
Stake Puller: A long device used to help aide in pulling stakes and anchors from the ground when pulling you trap.
Pack Basket/Set Making Bag: A bag or basket used for carrying your various traps, tools, and attractants.
Kneeling Pad: A small pad used for kneeling on when making land sets. It helps keep your knees from becoming sore as well as keeps the area from being contaminated with human scent.
Gauntlets: Water proof trapping gloves that are bicep or shoulder length. I believe these are a must for water trappers.
Gloves: Regular gloves of your choice for keeping your traps free of human scent.
Pliers: Just a regular pair of pliers with a wire cutter on it is invaluable tool on the trapline.
J-Hook Tool: A good quality j-hook tool is worth the money. It will save you time and pinched fingers.
Catch Pole: Used for releasing not target catches from your traps. It’s good to always have one with in the truck or boat.
